Environment Benefits of Spekboom Plant

Spekboom is one of the best carbon sequestrators in the world.

Hectare for hectare, in optimal conditions, Spekboom thicket can be as effective as the Amazon rainforest at removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – quite a feat for a plant endemic to semi-arid areas. One hectare of Spekboom can sequester between 4 and 10 tonnes of carbon per year.

This makes it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change and the move towards a zero-carbon world.

The plants are upright with small, round, fleshy leaves, indicating healthy growth. The image highlights sustainable practices and could be associated with circular economy South Africa or UN SDG-aligned business models focusing on environmental sustainability.

Impact on Communities and in particular persons with Disabilities

Innovative Entrepreneurs is working in partnership with Blind SA to ensure that the plants are grown by visually impaired persons leading to the following:

  1. Capacity development of Persons with Disabilities SDG4.

  2. On the job work experience for Persons with Disabilities SDG8.

  3. Income generating activity for Persons with Disabilities SDG10.

  4. Enterprise Development for Persons with Disabilities SDG8.

This initiative can be supported under the B-BBEE Enterprise Development or Socio-Economic Development Contributions.
